A desperate housewife in Ancient Greece

I now know what I want for Christmas. The headline A desperate housewife in Ancient Greece from the Globe and Mail, was so good I thought I’d steal it. The story it links to is one that had completely passed me by, but it appears that Random House have come up with a really interesting idea. They’re getting authors to retell ancient Greek myths from new perspectives. The story in the Globe and Mail is Margaret Attwood’s take on the Odyssey, being released as the Penelopiad:mrgreen:

). It’s a difficult task given the state of evidence for women’s lives in ancient Greece, so I’ll be interested to see how it turns out.

Anyhow it’s the box set:mrgreen:

, which also includes the next in the series Weight:mrgreen:

(Jeanette Winterson on Atlas), on my Christmas list as it also includes Karen Armstrong on myth and a short bit by Phillip Pullman.

I’ll be interested to see how they’re received in the Classics world. I think people will be willing to be less sniffy about myth than history. Which is interesting in itself if you start asking questions like what was early history for?
