Blog Schedule for August

Aug 13, 2005
1 min read

I’ll be moving my posts from 9am to midday from Sunday. I also may not be posting every day as I’m busy with life at the moment. However a guest blogger will be standing in.

Richard Hinckley Allen will be serialising his book Star Names and their Meanings. It was first published in 1899 and is dated, but nevertheless a useful reference for anyone looking into the history of the constellations. He’s been dead for a century which means he won’t actually be typing himself, but entering the text via an Optical Character Reader. This means some spelling won’t be 100% accurate, but it’ll be good enough to produce a web-searchable version of his book. The plan is to put the segments up in alphabetical order, but I may skip to ‘D’ rather quickly and then go back to fill the gaps.

Depending on how this goes William Hutton may add his account of being the first man to walk Hadrian’s Wall (since the Roman period at least). Norman Lockyer’s Dawn of Astronomy might also be useful, but I’ve Star Names to complete first.
