I’ve been trying to find some decent images to use on the cover of my book.

Last weekend, I visited my family in Lee County in South Florida and checked out some of the clean up piles from Hurricane Ian that came ashore at Ft. Myers last September.

As you can probably tell, they’re separating into piles the material collected here from demolition work in the region. The piles pictured above appear to be aluminum and consist primarily of siding.

Over thirty years ago, Bill Rathje and his collaborators observed that construction debris makes up a significant portion of the material in landfills. I suspect that some, if not most of this material, is headed for a landfill.

The other image that I really like and for me is representative of some aspects of archaeology of the contemporary world is from my time doing fieldwork in the Bakken.

I’m not sure either of these “work” for a cover, but I suspect a clever graphic designer can make them into something visually arresting.
