Creation Museum Carnival
The Creation Museum Carnival is up at Pharyngula. My own entry is Spotting Design, which I had been thinking around for a while. It’s frequent in many creationist claims that archaeologists just know when something is intentionally created. This is sometimes irksome, because one of the big problems in my thesis is showing intention. To be honest most of the public know this is a problem. The most common questions you get asked by the public when you’re digging are:
What have you found?
How do you know it’s that?
I think responding “I just do! Ok?” would be unsatisfying answer.
I appreciate that people have the freedom of speech and can are free to put forward their ideas. I think it’s immoral to spend money campaigning to promote ignorance and prejudice, but it’s a dangerous precedent to legally stop them. The corollary of that is that I should be free to say when I think they’re wrong.
The interesting puzzle for me is how many of those involved in creating this museum genuinely believe what they’ve exhibited? Can you really be successful enough to raise millions of dollars if you’re divorced from reality, or do you need fanaticism to drive you to raise that money?
