Declining Educational Standards

I had a bad day in Oxford on Monday. It’s coming up to exam time and it’s proving hard to get to the photocopier so I got very little done.

More depressing was the graffiti in the gents toilets of the Classics Library. Normally it would be obscene, explicit and in reasonably good Greek. Anyone writing a grammatically weak scrawl could have expected to be corrected (with references) and ridiculed for their lack of learning. These days though the graffiti is nearly all in English, with a woefully poor vocabulary and terrible penmanship. It seems the barbarians are not content with being at the gate, they’ve come inside and started to use the facilties.
