Down the Line
Until next Tuesday the full series of Down the Line is available from Radio 4 via Real Player. I haven’t heard them all yet. The first episode starts very slowly as Radio 4 was passing it off as a genuine phone-in show, but by Episode 2 – Religion it’s clearly a spoof.
Hi, I had a religious experience recently. I err… woke up at two o’clock in the morning… Mmm. …and there was a vision of Jesus, standing by the chair on the corner of the room. Yes? I said ‘Hello Jesus, what brings you here?’ but he didn’t reply. He just smiled enigmatically in that slightly irritating why that visions are wont to do. Yes. Well I went back to sleep… and in the morning my wife was dead beside me. Oh my god! So that’s why he was there. But y’know it would have been quite nice if he’d said ‘Shirley’s about to have a major heart attack ring 999’, rather than giving me a supercilious grin, but there you go. That’s Jesus for you isn’t it? When you saw Jesus… You know you can’t be too hard on him or… he’ll take it out on you in the afterlife. So do you believe in Jesus? Well I do now I’ve seen him in action, yes.
