Friday Varia and Quick Hits

The typical weekend rains came a couple of days earlier this week leaving us with drying weather on Saturday and Sunday. This means some yard work and smoking a couple of chickens (which isn’t a euphemism),

Hopefully, my outdoor responsibilities will be done by the kickoff of the Ohio State games on Saturday, or, if I’m really lucky by the F1 Sprint Race in Austin. The Eagles play the Vikings in what we can hope will be a bounce back game and the NASCAR guys are at Talladega. Someone told me that baseball continues even after the Phillies were eliminated.

Beyond that, all that is left on my schedule are some quick hits and varia:

• Byzantine Bread.

• Some Josh Nuddell

The Rise of AI Companions, Part 1 and Part 2.

Noodling’s Quick Hits.

• Open For Submissions.

• Two Books

Thresholds, Walls, and Bridges: Journeys Through the Borderlands of History.

The Campus Crisis Toolkit: Strategies and Solidarity for the Rest of Us.

• Two New Contributions to the History of Grand Forks

Urban Renewal in Grand Forks.

A Lost Neighborhood: An Early Immigrant Community.

• Two from Neville Morley

Beer

• Fail Better.

• What I’m reading: Mandakini Dubey, Esoteric Orientalism. 2025.

• What I’m listening to: RH Factor (Roy Hargrove), Hard Groove (2003)

Finally, three photos on film (expired Fuji Superia, I believe) taken this last summer by my buddy Richard Rothaus:
