Friday Varia and Quick Hits

After hitting the 90s yesterday, we’re going to settle in for more seasonal temperatures this weekend with highs in the 70s under our massive, blue prairie skies. Trees are just starting to change, lawns and gardens are looking a little less fresh, and everything feels just a bit like autumn.

It’s college football season and after a come from behind victory by Penn State last night, I’m remembering my love/hate relationship with college sports. I really love to see my teams win, but I really really hate to see them lose. Maybe because I spend my days among college students and see my students in those competing on the playing field, I find it harder and harder to watch a team lose. Professional sports, in contrast, feel a bit more like a business where even the losers benefit. As a result, I can watch my Eagles, Phillies, or Sixers lose and know that it’s not a desirable outcome, but also know that everyone can go home, dust themselves off, enjoy their reward for a day’s work, and try again the next year.

In any event, Ohio State takes on #5 Notre Dame on Saturday night and win or lose, couches will be burning on High Street in Columbus that night. The NASCAR guys run on Sunday night at Darlington and the F1 circus is at Zandvoort in the Netherlands. My Phils are out West for their annual fall bloodletting and Australia plays Zimbabwe tonight for the last of three, early summer, ODIs against the Chevrons.

Of course, I have a stack of work to do (and a couple of books to finish) and an issue of NDQ to get sorted and want to get in a bike ride, but other than that, I feel like I need to take some time this week to recharge my batteries and to restock my diminished supply of quick hits and varia:
