I’m not sure what the rate of interest is

The cancer blogging continues. See the introduction for more details.

Chemotherapy may have side-effects, so I was advised to visit a sperm bank. How badly did this go?

There’s four dimensions you can see. Three dimensions of space and an extra one of time. However that leaves some mysteries. For instance why is gravity so much weaker than the other forces? Physicists theorise there are more dimensions, possibly eleven, and gravity leaks into these. It’s thought that no-one has yet found if these dimensions exist. I can confirm they do. They’re integral to the layout of the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham, where the Andrology clinic has a sperm bank. The corridors twist and turn in a manner that would disorientate even the most eager topologist. That’s why I ended up in Opthalmic wing first and asked for directions. If you’re ever in a similar situation that’s a step you might want to avoid. I’m told there’s similar problem with people turning up for colonoscopies in the Elbowology department. On the plus side confusing Ophthalmology with Andrology can have benefits. After all, too many trips to the sperm bank and you’ll go blind.

I don’t really want to go into huge detail about this. You can take it that Coupling S03E07, was almost a documentary. Still, there’s some things that it’s helpful to note. One is that bankers are screened for various diseases by blood tests. I now know I’m HIV-negative, which wasn’t a shock. Your mileage may vary, especially if you do a lot of mileage. Of course waiting for the blood test will add on more time. This is a problem if you’re in a short-stay car park (<2 hours), the Andrology clinic lost you for an hour and when you get to the blood clinic the nurses are off on lunch.

The other time-sink is the immense amount of paperwork involved. I think I’ve spent more time filling out forms for sperm banking than everything else combined. I have to stay in contact with the centre on annual basis else the sperm get destroyed. There’s a presumption to destroy them anyway after ten years, so I’ve now got my own biological clock. There is a possible option to extend by another 10 years in exceptional circumstances.

All this paperwork is because of the ethical issues surrounding storage of sperm. There’s a plausible argument that sperm banking should be discouraged not because of anyone playing God, but simply because if it became typical there’d be a huge impact with deforestation for all the forms. If you are someone who thinks of sperm as mini-humans, then I’ve deposited a major headache, because there’s millions upon millions of them. Yes indeed, I think it’s worth noting that it has been officially recorded that my potency is above average. Ladies, please form an orderly queue.

I suppose I should have asked for a photocopy.
