Moving – but not yet

Thanks to everyone who commented or emailed me. I’ve decided to stick with WordPress, but return to my own server. I’m currently using Dreamhost for Clioaudio and have masses of bandwidth and space I’m not using. I’m very busy at the moment, so it won’t happen till this weekend at the earliest.

What I’ll do when I move is mark this blog as private to put it on hold. Then I’ll export it and import it to Clioaudio.com. Next I’ll point the feedburner feed to Clioaudio so if you read this site using that hopefully there won’t be any visible change.

After that I’ll block comments on this site and add a note saying the site has moved. Then I’ll render the site invisible to search engines – but I won’t delete it. Bora has a post explaining why it’s not helpful and it means that links to the archaeoastronomy.wordpress.com site won’t break.

Advantages of being on my own hosted site are:

  • Flash animations will work, if I can find where I left them on the hard-drive to re-upload them.

  • The maps for the Hadrian’s Wall posts can be fixed and other maps should be relatively easy to create.

  • The blogroll can be massively improved. As well as a page of links I’ll also be able to randomly rotate 20 on the front page. At the moment I’m subscribed to about 130 sites – which would make the pages a bit long if I listed all of them in the sidebar.

  • I’ll be able to apply to appear on NewsNow.

  • Hosting will be Carbon Neutral

  • I’ll be able to host pangolins from the blog. This might not mean much at the moment if you never read the Zx Spectrum manual.

  • I may be able to activate the Talk Like A Pirate plug-in again and have theme days. Recent visitors might not be aware that the site briefly appeared as The Britney Spears site of, like, really ancient stuff.

I’ve decided not to pursue the aggregator idea for now, as it’s too much hassle, but it may appear sometime in the future.

Fixing the site will probably be a job for after submission as I’ll want to go through most of the older posts fixing links.
