Music Monday: Some David Murray and Friends

The weekend was filled with grading and that means some fun listening.

First, I became fascinated listening to Sunny Murray’s drumming and really enjoyed his collaboration with (no relation) David Murray and Kalid El’Zabar on A Sanctuary Within (1991).

This led me to check out David Murray’s duet with Randy Weston, The Healers (1987):

This inspired me to check out brand new album David Murray’s Birdly Serenade (2025) which is lovely:

I want to write a longer post sometime on the new Sun Ra release the complete recordings from Nuits De La Fondation Maeght (1970). so I’ll pass on it today, but I was very excited to listen to the re-release of Stanley Cowell’s Musa: Ancestral Streams (1974) which I blogged about a few weeks ago. 

A near contemporary recording of Cedar Walton’s group called Mobius (1975) highlighting some of Ryo Kawasaki amazing guitar:
