Music Monday: Some New Music

A bunch of great new music came out over the last couple of weeks and, while I usually try to listen to bit of new and a bit of old music, this week is ALL new music.

First, I absolutely love the Tyshawn Sorey trio’s new album, The Susceptible Now. I wish I could put some of it album here, but the best I can do is offer a link to it on Bandcamp. It is absolutely worth listening to the interplay between Aaron Deihl’s piano, Harish Raghavan on McCoy Tyner’s “Peresina.” “Your Good Lies” is another absolutely brilliant track.

I’ve also come to like saxophonist Kevin Sun’s Quartets. Again, the best that I can do is offer you a Bandcamp link. It’s worth listening to, though. One of the coolest things is that Sun provided his own discursive notes on the album: Side A and Side B.

There was a nice article in the NYT about Tim Berne last week. It struck me as a bit odd mostly because Berne has always seemed to be a kind of low key dude. Of course, it made a bit more sense when he released a new album this week, Parlour Games: a duet with bassist Michael Formanek. I like duets especially ones without piano or drums. It feels like both Berne and Formanek had plenty of room to do their thing and really explore the tone of their instruments. This album IS on the YouTubes and Bandcamp.

Finally, I’ve been enjoying the new Isaiah Collier and the Chosen Few album, The World is on Fire. You can check it out on Bandcamp here. It’s woke AF and good music.

Here’s a track from it called “The Hate You Give, Is The Love You Lose”:

Finally, I’d be remiss not to mention the passing of Ka. Since his best album The Night’s Gambit, isn’t on my streaming service, I’ve been listening to it on the YouTubes:

I have been enjoying his most recent album (which came out in September). It’s called The Thief Next to Jesus and it’s very solid and if you listen to it you’ll see how it’s relevant to some of my research:
