Music Monday: Some Piano and Some Drums

I was in the mood for some piano jazz this weekend and started off by listening to Stanley Cowell’s Equipoise (1979). It features Cowell on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums.

I really enjoy this album. In fact, I’ve posted it before. It got me thinking about Roy Haynes and that pushed me to listen to We Three (1958), one of his late 1950s recordings with the pianist Phineas Newborn and bassist Paul Chambers. It is easily my favorite Newborn recording (better than Harlem Blues which I linked to a couple weeks back).

That got me to listen to Roy Haynes 2011 album Roy-Alty with is nominally a quartet date (with Jaleel Shaw on alto sax, Martin Bejerano on piano, and David Wong on bass), but it filled with fun cameos including Chick Corea and Roy Hargrove. 

Of course, hearing Corea’s cameo got me thinking of Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (1968) which features Haynes on drums (and Miroslav Vitouš on bass). It’s an album that I don’t always appreciate, but lately, I have. In fact, I’m going to save it to my phone for some travel time listening:
