I can sympathise with Duane Smith at Abnormal Interests who blogs on the cost of research. There are days when it would have been cheaper to buy the book. He’s also put up a very good post on why writing has the shapes it does which is a discussion of a paper on the topic. Fantastically it’s available online. More details at his site.

The Stoa has a model of the Acropolis you can download and view in Google Earth. They noted in an earlier post that a light version of Sketch Up is free. I haven’t downloaded it yet, I can see how badly that could eat up my time, but there’s huge potential waiting to be tapped.

Airminded has some excellent news about Air University Press titles being available online.

This bit of coding on a sign generator is a small stroke of genius.

ClioWeb has thoughts on CSS/XHTML/JavaScript-based historical timelines. If that makes no sense it would be a way of creating historical timelines in a way that computers can easily read and reproduce without fouling them up. It’s one of these things which ought to be simple. Off the top of my head though I’m stuck. Worth reading if you’re interesting in mark-up for history.

Wessex Archaeology have announced their new photo gallery which integrates Flickr into their site. If you’re from the United States then you may have a closer connection to the archaeology of Wessex than you realise. Wessex Archaeology are trying to track down relatives of servicemen who left graffiti at Tidworth Barracks. For historical reasons I think, rather than for any unpaid fines.

On Radio 4: Revolting People, a comedy set in the American War of Independence, has started a new series. The next episode is up on Tuesday. In Our Time discusses the connections between Astronomy and Empire. The Material World has a segment on politics and science, which includes a contribution by Dr Michael Stebbins, author of Sex, Drugs and DNA.

On BBC TV, if you’ve missed them there are downloadable commentaries for the episodes for the David Tennant series of Doctor Who. I wasn’t too keen on New Earth, but they’ve been improving greatly since then. If you’re American you can console yourself with the fact you get Battlestar Galactica before we do over here.

Finally another gratuitous Eddie Izzard clip. Contains strong language.
