Sparta, View from by the Temple of Athena

“Suppose the city of Sparta to be deserted, and nothing left but the temples and the ground-plan, distant ages would be very unwilling to believe that the power of the Lacedaemonians was at all equal to their fame” – Thucydides trans. Jowett.

Hoards of History is a new blog. So new it started today – spotted with the Tag Surfer mentioned in the previous entry. The opening post, after the welcome, is Lycurgus. I’m tempted to quibble, I can think of other historical fictions who have had a huge influence, but that would sound like an unkind heckle. Given the aim is to be bite-size there’s only so much you can say. It looks like it could well be worth a weekly visit.

Liz at the Big Blog of Cheese, points to the Biomedical Image Awards. She’s right the aspirin crystals are beautiful. There’s also a photo of a creature thought to be responsible for around half the deaths of all humans that have ever lived. The creature is obvious when you give it some thought.

See You at Enceladus has a new look and a Golden Rule for Skeptics. It’s an elegant idea.

There’s a lot I could choose from Millard Fillmore’s Bathtub (another WordPress.com blog – I explained why in a previous post). The most recent entry is Preserving history, for veterans which tackles history in the making.

Elsewhere Duane Smith at Abnormal Interests has news on the nuclear attack at the UN Headquarters that every major news outlet seems to have missed.

Butterflies and Wheels has news on how Kenyan fundamentalists have learned the ‘C’ word. Also covered in Pharyngula.

And finally Martin Rundkvist talks about Truth, Power, Fascism and Silly Buggers tackling the paper I talked about yesterday. I appear in the comments after Mugabe.
