Silbury Hill

Silbury Hill

Another photo I’ve found on my hard drive, which would have been handy if I’d found it sooner. Silbury Hill is an enigma. If it’s a burial mound then it’s an odd one as it’s not very visible. It has been suggested to be an astronomical observatory, but it’s built in a valley. You’d get at least as good a view from any of the nearby hills.

It also looks more or less the same from every direction. Here’s a photo from the other side at Avebury car park. This could be one of those things where you need to peer into the minds of the builders to work out what’s going on which is at the very least difficult with archaeology.
