Jewry Wall

The Jewry Wall, Leicester

This is the Jewry Wall, the oldest remaining building in Leicester. It’s the side of a Roman bath house. In the foreground you can see some of the walls marking out the remains of the rooms. It’s close to the centre of the modern and the ancient town. There was a big effort in the 50s and 60s to find out where the Roman forum of Ratae Corieltauvium (Roman Leicester) was. However it proved elusive and after much effort people left it. Then there was a need to drive an underpass through St Nicholas’s Circle in a hurry and that’s when the forum was found.

There’s a museum on site, Vaughan College, where the university teaches the certificate in Archaeology in the evenings, overlooks it, and the BBC have a Java VR thing available on their site.

It’s also not too far from where I’m talking today.
