The upgrade is (more or less) finished
I’ve done with the code-tweaking side of the upgrade to the site for now. I’ve switched to the Cutline theme as it was a lot friendlier for what I wanted to do out of the box than Gridlock, which is important when you accidentally commit changes to the live-site rather than the back-up.
The changes are that I’m using tags for public navigation now rather than categories. The most obvious public change is that I have lots of entries to tag, which will take at least a month to do. I has hoped I could open tagging to anyone who registered, but at the moment that’s not happening. If a plugin becomes available then I’ll activate it.
I’ve also tried to make it a bit clearer that comments may be held for moderation. You may be able to bypass some of Akismet by registering, but it’s not essential. One of the reasons I’m not commenting on blogs hosted by Blogger at the moment is partly due to a problem processing logging in. Additionally I’ve set comments to close if there hasn’t been a comment on a topic in 30 days. At least 99% of comments on older posts are spam. You should also be able to edit your comments for up to 15 minutes after submitting them.
The Links list is now at Technorati. If I favourite your blog and tag it History then it should also appear in the New History feed. The full list isn’t on site as it’s over 150 sites and would mean managing a duplicate and redundant list – technorati is the site I actually use for managing blog links. It also means that active blogs are more likely to be listed on the front page.
Finally the site is once again festooned in adverts, at least on some entries. I use some photos under an NC Creative Commons licence, so I’m going through older posts to make sure they’re exempt. Posts like this in contrast are now carrying ads. If you’re having trouble spotting them, you’ll find them just under the photobanner. Still can’t see one? Ok, try visiting the site from Google, or another search engine. They shouldn’t appear to anyone who reads the site regularly or came via a link from another site.
