Wrestling with a Supernatural Experience
I’m being kept busy with work, so here’s a post about one of my paranormal experiences. It’s one of the times I saw a ghost, despite the fact I don’t believe in ghosts.
Like all good visitations it happened around 4am. Initially I didn’t know what was happening. I woke up and felt a strange chill in the room. I couldn’t see anything because the duvet had been pulled up over my head. I went to pull it down, but I couldn’t. As much as I tried to move my arms they were pinned as though someone was trying to suffocate me. I fought with no success at first, but eventually managed to wrestle my attacker off me and sit up. As I did I saw a middle-aged man fade before my eyes.
I’ve had a ghost try and suffocate me and disappear before my eyes. What more evidence will it take to make me believe in ghosts? Well there are one or two problems.
One is that I know I have an active time when I’m asleep. I move around a lot, sometimes ending with my feet on my pillow. I talk a lot and can hold conversations with people while fast asleep. I can be exhausted after a night’s sleep. It’s quite feasible I’d pull the duvet up over my own face. If I did that I might have trouble breathing and that would wake me up. Usually I’d just pull the duvet back down roll over, go to sleep and think no more of it. But if I woke up with sleep paralysis then that would be a shock. For a while I wouldn’t be able to move the duvet off my face. I’d guess a duvet over the face would wake me up unnaturally early. Which can lead to the sensation of temporary paralysis. If you’re not fully awake and having trouble breathing, that could be a bit of a concern.
So how do I explain what I saw? The guy I saw did look awfully like how I imagine Winston Smith from 1984. I read the second half of 1984 that evening and it’s not a cheerful book. I probably fell asleep in an anxious state of mind and when my tired brain knew there was an attacker in my room the shapes at the foot of my bed were first interpreted as a person. We have a natural tendency to see faces in shapes. As I came to the scene became normal, hence the disappearance.
Ok, but it wasn’t just my eyes was it? I felt the presence in the room. How could I feel it before I saw it unless it was real? I was sleeping by a window where cold air falls. My head was away from the window, but my feet were right underneath it. Though I didn’t normally have cold feet in the night as I usually had a thick duvet over them. However, I’m about six foot tall. If I do pull a duvet over my head then something has to pop out from the other end.
My explanation then is this was a particularly memorable waking experience. If it had gone normally then I would have just rolled over and fallen back asleep like I usually do. The alternative is that I’m so important that supernatural entities have created the spirit of a fictional character to assassinate me as I sleep. I have a big ego, but it’s not that big. —–
